Peter Obi says keeping Nnamdi Kanu in prolonged detention “doesn’t make sense,” stressing that name-calling or verbal attacks shouldn’t be a reason for incarceration, NaijNaira can report.
During a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the former Labour Party presidential candidate questioned why the IPOB leader remains in the custody of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS).
Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria on charges of terrorism and treason.
Obi said, “For every one of them, I mean where has it been heard? It doesn’t make sense to me.”
He added, “Some people say because he used vulgar words… if there’s anything wrong, I’ve not seen it.”
Obi also brushed off insults directed at him, saying, “Whether you call me a thief, call me an idiot, which they call me today, it doesn’t bother me.”
He emphasized that a leader’s focus should be on citizens’ welfare rather than reacting to criticism.
“My duty as a leader is for the common man to put food on their table,” he said.
When asked about his strategy for tackling insecurity in regions like the Northeast and Southeast, Obi stated he would prioritize dialogue.
“If there are people I can talk to, I will talk to them,” he explained.
He also clarified that once all efforts at communication are exhausted, he would take firm action.
Obi said, “Let’s say tomorrow we have a bandit named Seun operating in the Northeast, I will look for Seun… just to say, enough is enough. Afterwards, deal with it decisively.”
