Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II missed the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura due to official duties in the United Kingdom, NaijNaira can report. The Emir is expected to return to Nigeria today.
A close associate, Muhammadu Dallatu, explained Sanusi’s absence in a conversation with The PUNCH, confirming the monarch had travelled to London on official engagement. “The Emir will not attend. He’s not even in the country. He travelled to London for an official engagement and is expected back on Wednesday,” Dallatu said.
Over the weekend, Sanusi was seen at the 2025 Access Bank Polo Tournament in Surrey, England, where he interacted with notable figures, including England’s national football manager, Thomas Tuchel.
Meanwhile, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, Sanusi’s nephew and the 15th Emir of Kano, attended the state burial on Tuesday, alongside other dignitaries from Jigawa State. “Yes, His Highness Aminu Ado Bayero left Kano this morning for Daura to pay his last respects,” Bayero’s spokesman Abubakar Naisa confirmed.
The Kano Emirate remains divided, following political changes and legal disputes. Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Sanusi in May 2024 after repealing the law that had created multiple emirates. Bayero continues to occupy the main palace, awaiting a court ruling.
