Nigeria’s D’Tigress are gearing up to defend their Women’s AfroBasket crown, aiming for a fifth consecutive title as they kick off against Rwanda in Abidjan, NaijNaira can report.
According to FIBA, Nigeria enters the tournament with a flawless 29-0 record against African opponents since 2015. That streak includes wins both at home and overseas.
Coach Rena Wakama, named 2024 Paris Olympics Coach of the Year, returns to the sidelines, looking to become the first woman to lead a team to two AfroBasket titles.
“This team is built on resilience and trust,” Wakama said ahead of the opening game.
D’Tigress last tasted defeat in 2015 but have since dominated Africa, collecting four straight titles and beating major rivals like Senegal and Mali in key qualifiers.
In February, they defeated Senegal 72–57 in Belgium during the Olympic Qualifiers.
Their success includes an 85–51 blowout of Mozambique in 2020 and a hard-fought 73–69 victory over Mali in 2022.
Despite pulling out of the 2022 World Cup, Nigeria remains Africa’s top-ranked team.
Now back on the continental stage, the question remains: can they go five-for-five and make history in Abidjan?
