Jon Stewart is concerned about the fate of The Daily Show following the abrupt cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show, NaijNaira can report. Colbert’s exit, confirmed by CBS this week, follows a sharp on-air critique of Paramount’s recent $16 million settlement with Donald Trump.
According to DailyMail, CBS attributed Colbert’s departure to budget constraints, not performance or politics. Stewart addressed the situation on The Weekly Show podcast, hours before Colbert’s firing went public. “They haven’t called me and said like, ‘Don’t get too comfortable in that office, Stewart!’” he said.
The network plans to retire The Late Show in May 2026, citing unsustainable production costs reportedly nearing $100 million annually. Despite Colbert outperforming rivals Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel in ratings, ad revenue decline played a critical role in the decision.
Stewart, 62, noted Paramount’s pending $8 billion merger with Skydance could also affect his show’s future. “Without The Daily Show, Comedy Central is kind of like muzak at this point,” he remarked.
Colbert, seemingly unfazed, joked about the settlement on air, calling it “a big, fat, bribe.” Trump praised the cancellation online, calling Colbert’s talent “less than his ratings.”
