Kelechi Iheanacho may be heading out of Spain for good, with reports indicating Sevilla are finalizing a deal to send the Super Eagles forward to Mexican side Pumas UNAM, NaijNaira can report.
The move comes after a string of underwhelming performances from the former Leicester City striker, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
Iheanacho failed to impress in England’s second tier, scoring just once and providing a single assist in 15 appearances.
Despite returning to Sevilla for pre-season, his future has been uncertain, with former sporting director Victor Orta admitting the signing was a mistake.
“Signing Iheanacho didn’t work out. We expected more, and it just didn’t click,” Orta told local media during his exit interview.
Current head coach Matias Almeyda is reportedly not interested in including the Nigerian forward in his plans for the season.
The Express reports that Sevilla are now close to sealing a transfer to Pumas UNAM, who sit bottom of the Liga MX table after losing their opening game.
The Mexican side, though rich in history, has not lifted silverware in over a decade.
Iheanacho, who turns 29 in October, needs consistent minutes if he hopes to make Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
With no interest from top European clubs, a move to Mexico could be his only path back to regular football.
Pumas UNAM may not be a glamorous destination, but for Iheanacho, it’s likely the only door still open at this point in his career.
