Former Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai, popularly called “Dodo Mayana,” passed away on July 3 at 61, and those closest to him are still waiting for word on his burial plans, NaijNaira can report.
According to report, his longtime teammate Dosu Joseph said Rufai’s body remains at the morgue, as friends and fellow players await updates from the family.
“Peter Rufai was not just a skilled goalkeeper but a genuinely kind man,” Dosu said while recalling their early friendship from the Stationery Stores era.
Though Dosu never played at the club, he would visit after training and formed a tight bond with Rufai through their shared role on the pitch.
“He welcomed his nickname ‘Dodo Mayana’ with a smile. It was a name that suited his character—cheerful and humble,” Dosu shared.
Rufai’s respectful attitude left a lasting impression. “He treated everyone with dignity,” Dosu said.
He mentioned that former national players are planning a tribute but cannot release specifics yet.
“There’s internal coordination going on among us. The Nigeria Football Federation and Lagos State will likely contribute as well,” he added.
Rufai’s roots in Lagos were strong—he once played for Stationery Stores, lived in the city, and represented Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup.
Security staff at his estate described him as generous and friendly.
“He was always warm with us,” one staff member said. “He’d pay his bills promptly and even ask for them ahead of time. Rufai made everyone feel valued.”
They remembered his passion for youth football. “He trained kids on a field in the estate. He’d even invite us to join in, though our jobs kept us busy,” the guard added.
Others who knew him echoed the same calm presence.
“Peter Rufai was the kind of neighbour you rarely heard but always appreciated,” said Prisca Ngozi Igbokwe, who lived nearby.
His football academy has reportedly shut down since his passing, and family members have asked for privacy during the mourning period.
