Following heated remarks from Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev, Donald Trump confirmed that two U.S. nuclear submarines have been repositioned as a precaution—www.naijnaira.com reports.
Trump said the move was a response to what he called “highly provocative statements” and emphasized that “words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences.”
According to Outlook India, Trump posted on his platform that the submarines had been sent to “appropriate regions” in case Medvedev’s remarks went beyond mere rhetoric.
Asked by reporters where the subs had been moved, Trump offered no details but insisted the order was made “on the basis of safety.”
Meanwhile, Russia’s response came swiftly. Lawmaker Viktor Vodolatsky stated that “the number of Russian nuclear submarines in the world’s oceans is significantly higher than the American ones.”
Dismissing the need for further action, he added, “Let the two U.S. subs sail; they’ve been in the crosshairs for a long time now.”
Medvedev had earlier warned Trump that issuing ultimatums could lead to war, not just with Ukraine but directly with Russia.
Trump’s administration also confirmed a deadline reduction—from 50 days to just 10—for Russia to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Medvedev’s tone has grown increasingly aggressive since 2022, frequently using nuclear threats as political tools.
Political analysts say Trump’s decision might raise tensions but has yet to translate into direct military confrontation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later echoed U.S. Secretary Marco Rubio’s view that such a clash “must not happen.”
