Marcus Rashford’s remarkable streak of scoring in 10 consecutive home matches for Manchester United was denied by VAR on Saturday night during the team’s 3-1 victory over Reading.
Had his goal been allowed to stand, Rashford would have made United history.
But VAR ruled that Wout Weghorst, who provided the assist for the goal, had been offside in the build-up – even though Casemiro’s pass had not been intended for him and it had actually been deflected into his path by a Reading defender.
After coming so close to making history, Rashford expressed his frustration on Twitter saying it was the “Absolute Shocker” and he had been ‘got by VAR’ three times this season.
Despite this disappointment, he is still level with Dennis Viollet having scored in nine straight home games for the club – something Viollet achieved back in 1959 with 32 goals in one league season.
That impressive tally makes him the joint fourth-highest goalscorer at United alongside George Best.
Despite being denied his slice of Man U history this time round, Rashford remains in fine form with 18 goals in 30 appearances overall this season – 12 more than second-top scorer Bruno Fernandes.
The win over Reading thanks to first-half goals from Casemiro and Fred ensured that Amadou Mbengue’s late header was mere consolation for Reading.
