Reports claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari is critically ill in a London hospital have been exaggerated, NaijNaira can report.
Bashir Ahmad, who served as Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, addressed the swirling claims on his verified X account, formerly known as Twitter.
He was responding to several online posts and media reports suggesting that the 81-year-old former Nigerian leader had been rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the UK.
“Saying he is critically ill and in the ICU is inaccurate. Yes, he is receiving medical care, but he is stable and improving,” Ahmad posted.
He confirmed Buhari is currently under medical supervision but emphasized that the reports had overstated the seriousness of the situation.
The original claims were first carried by Sahara Reporters, fueling speculation and triggering concern among Buhari’s supporters.
Ahmad added, “We appreciate the outpouring of prayers and goodwill from his supporters and well-wishers around the world.”
A second confirmation came from another former presidential aide, Garba Shehu, who also acknowledged Buhari’s current health situation.
“Shehu noted, ‘He became ill there, but I am happy to announce he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment.’”
Buhari’s health has been a recurring topic since his 2017 medical stay in London that lasted over three months.
Since leaving office in 2023, he has maintained a low profile, alternating between Daura and Kaduna, with periodic medical visits abroad.
