An Air India plane crash occurred on Thursday shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing more than 240 people. The London-bound flight, carrying passengers of various nationalities, crashed into a residential area near the airport.
According to The Associated Press, the Air India London flight, identified as AI 171, struck Meghani Nagar just five minutes after takeoff. The Boeing 787 crash is the first of its kind involving this aircraft model. Emergency crews worked to control the fire and assist affected residents.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the event as “devastating” and expressed sympathy for all those impacted. Air India’s chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, confirmed that support teams and an emergency center were immediately activated to assist families.
India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, stated that rescue operations and medical aid efforts are ongoing. Boeing acknowledged the incident and is working to collect additional details.
The Ahmedabad plane crash has raised concerns about Boeing aircraft safety. The last major air disaster in India occurred in 2020 when an Air India Express flight crashed in southern India.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of Thursday’s crash. The Boeing 787 involved had been in service since 2009.
