A lawyer named Festus Ogun has criticized a portion of President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech, in which he stated that “illegal orders used to truncate or abridge democracy will no longer be tolerated.”
Ogun believes that Tinubu’s statement is a threat to the judiciary and an attack on the separation of powers enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
He argues that any Tribunal order declaring Tinubu’s return as invalid would not “truncate democracy,” but rather strengthen it.
“To be clear, any Tribunal order declaring Tinubu’s return as invalid cannot “truncate democracy”, it would rather strengthen it,” the lawyer argued.
Ogun stresses that court orders must be obeyed and not regarded as “illegal,” and that Tinubu’s assertion is an abuse and a calculated attempt to subvert Nigeria’s democracy.
He warns that such a government that does not respect court orders, particularly unfavorable ones they consider illegal, is a danger to democracy.
