APC Slams Atiku Over PDP Crisis, Dismisses Allegations Against Tinubu

Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over his recent remarks on judicial intervention in elections and allegations of government interference in opposition politics. In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Barrister Felix Morka, the APC dismissed Atiku’s claims as baseless and hypocritical, while blaming him for the PDP’s internal turmoil and broader opposition dysfunction.

The APC rebuked Atiku for asserting at a democracy conference that judicial involvement in electoral disputes threatens Nigeria’s democracy, calling the claim “ludicrous” given Atiku’s history of leveraging courts to challenge election outcomes. The party argued that the judiciary’s constitutional mandate to resolve disputes, including electoral matters, remains vital. It also mocked Atiku’s unsubstantiated allegation that President Bola Tinubu is bribing opposition leaders with ₦50 million to destabilize rival parties, labeling the charge “bogus” and reflective of Atiku’s desperation.

The APC further accused Atiku and the PDP of hypocrisy, recalling their controversial electoral conduct during his tenure as vice president (1999–2007), including the PDP’s “do-or-die” approach to elections under President Olusegun Obasanjo. The party contrasted past PDP malpractices with what it described as freer and fairer polls under APC governance.

Responding to broader criticism from opposition figures—including Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former APC member Nasir El-Rufai—that the APC is undermining rivals, the APC dismissed such claims as excuses for the opposition’s failure to manage internal affairs. It urged Atiku to focus on rebuilding the PDP rather than “petty politicking” ahead of the 2027 elections.

The statement concluded by asserting that Nigeria’s democracy remains resilient despite opposition “alarmism,” emphasizing that the APC prioritizes national progress over divisive rhetoric. The party urged citizens to reject what it termed the “false narratives” of politicians seeking relevance.
