The Nigerian Army is set to unveil the national and regimental colours for its new and operationalised units ahead of the presidential inauguration on May 29th.
The announcement was made by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to Nwachukwu, the last Trooping and Presentation of Colours Parade for the units was conducted in 2007.
Since then, new units have been established and operationalised in line with the army’s increasing operational commitments and provisions of its extant Order of Battle (ORBAT).
The army spokesperson explained that the colours have been used in multiple operations in various geopolitical zones, as well as foreign countries, making it necessary to present new ones.
He added that in line with the traditions, customs, and ethics of the Nigerian Army, the trooping and presentation of colours parade will be conducted to retire torn or worn out colours.
A total of 81 units will participate in the parade, with 53 colours due for retirement and 28 presented to new units.
The presentation of colours is a symbolic military tradition that involves the formal presentation of the national and regimental colours to a unit.
The colours represent the unit’s loyalty, spirit, and history, and are guarded with honor and pride.
