Arne Slot has decided to keep James McConnell with Liverpool for the remainder of the season after the 20-year-old’s impressive performance in their 3-2 defeat at PSV in the Champions League.
Despite the loss, which was Liverpool’s first European defeat this season, the Reds finished top of their group.
The match was an opportunity for several youngsters to showcase their talent, with McConnell playing the full 90 minutes on his Champions League debut.
Slot significantly rotated his lineup due to qualification already being secured.
He praised McConnell for his competitive attitude and strong performance, especially considering his recent injury struggles.
The midfielder joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2019 and has not played much in the past six or seven months but impressed the manager with his work ethic and readiness.
Slot confirmed that McConnell will not be sent out on loan, stating, “He definitely deserves credit for his performance today.”
McConnell has made appearances in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season but is yet to feature in the Premier League under Slot.
Liverpool is already through to the Champions League knockout stage, and the team now awaits the draw for the round of 16, which will take place on February 21.
The draw for the knockout play-offs is scheduled for January 31, involving teams that finished 9th to 24th in the group stage
