Arsenal have reportedly decided to pull out of their attempts to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton after the Seagulls rejected a second bid for the midfielder.
The Gunners offered £70million for the 21-year-old Ecuadorian, but this was soon knocked back by the South Coast outfit.
This encounter has seen Arsenal look elsewhere in their search for a new midfielder before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, with Mohamed Elneny’s injury adding further urgency.
It is now unlikely that they will make a third bid for Caicedo, who himself asked to leave Brighton and has since been kept away from its training ground until Wednesday.
Roberto De Zerbi, manager of Brighton, had commented after his team’s FA Cup win over Liverpool on Sunday that they were prepared to move on without Caicedo despite wanting him till the end of the season.
Brighton, who are in sound financial shape following transfers like Ben White’s and Leandro Trossard’s, paid only £3.5m when signing Caicedo in 2021 from his native Independiente del Valle – although he did attract interest from giants Manchester United and Liverpool last summer.
