Aston VIlla lost 3-0 at Fulham on Thursday night in a truly dismal performance and that defeat cost Steven Gerrard his job as Villa wasted no time in sacking the Liverpool legend after the full-time whistle.

The turnaround is quick as Villa now face another West London club this afternoon, this time taking on Brentford at Villa Park.

There hasn’t been enough time for Villa to bring in a new boss and that means caretaker Aaron Danks will be in charge today.

Gerrard’s coaching staff have been sent packing too, meaning Danks is the man left to steer the ship today.

Danks, 37, previously held jobs in the West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City youth setups before playing a key role in the England Under-21 and Under-20 systems.

Danks also worked under Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht before joining Villa in 2021, with this now his big chance to shine.

The young English coach doesn’t seem afraid to stamp his mark on this Villa side.

According to The Telegraph, Danks has already decided to bench club captain John McGinn for today’s game.

McGinn was made captain by Gerrard over the summer having taken the armband away from Tyrone Mings.

The Scot hasn’t quite been at his best though and has made next to no impact in the final third.

Fans have been calling for McGinn to be benched but Gerrard kept the faith in his captain, starting him in every single Premier League game this season.

Danks isn’t having any of it though and is now taking McGinn out of the team to face Brentford. Showing that the Gerrard era really is over.

Fellow midfielder Jacob Ramsey will allegedly be dropped as well with Danks in no mood to play favourites as Villa desperately chase points to kickstart their season.
