ASUP Urges FG to Reverse Illegal Appointment of Seven Rectors

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is calling on the Federal Government to reverse the appointment of seven university professors as rectors of Federal Polytechnics, citing the appointments as illegal.

ASUP warns university professors against applying for the position of polytechnic rector, as it goes against the provisions of the Polytechnics Amendment Act 2019.

The union believes that covetousness and greed are driving university lecturers to come to a system they have not worked for.

According to the law, anyone who has not served as a chief lecturer in a polytechnic for at least five years cannot be appointed rector of a polytechnic.

ASUP’s National President, Dr Anderson Ezeibe, emphasizes that the union will not relent in ensuring total compliance with the provisions of the law.

Ezeibe advises state governments to domesticate the law to ensure standard in the manner polytechnics are run in the country.

Last month, ASUP wrote to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to inform him of the decision of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria relating to the appointment of professors as rectors of some federal polytechnics by the federal government.

The judge held that the appointment of five individuals was not made in accordance with the law.

Ezeibe advises the government to comply with the judgment and the provisions of the law and start the process of appointing new persons as rectors of the schools
