Waziri Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of having a history of cornering public assets.
This is in response to Tinubu’s claim that Atiku sold off government properties and diverted the proceeds.
According to Atiku’s special assistant on public communication Phrank Shaibu, he believes that if Tinubu were to become president, he would do the same as he did when he was governor of Lagos State – acquiring federal government properties across the country.
Shaibu alleged that Bola Tinubu has been using his reign of power since 1999 to turn the state into his personal property.
According to an interview Tinubu gave with The News Magazine a decade ago, he had returned to Nigeria after the June 12 struggle with nothing but five shirts, two thousand pounds and some jackets.
Yet, Shaibu states that Tinubu’s wealth has grown substantially due to his taking control of government properties.
Shaibu pointed out how in 2006 Tinubu took possession of land formerly occupied by Lagos Polytechnic at Ikosi near the old toll gate; on which now stands his own television station TVC.
Furthermore, he criticized an “obnoxious” pension law created during Tinubu’s term as governor, which grants its beneficiary a lifetime allowance including six brand new cars every three years and free medical care for them and their families.
Moreover, Slate noted that the Lagos State Guest House located in Asokoro was reported bought for ₦450 million before being handed back over to Tinubu under his Pension Law.
Additionally, he added tollgates along Lekki-Epe Expressway and Alpha Beta Consulting in further detail as also being under the control of Tinubu.
Shaibu stressed how if Tinubu continues to take ownership of federal properties it would transform Nigeria into a country where its citizens are turned into second-class citizens in their own homeland.
In closing, Shuaibu pointed out how Lateef Jakande had managed to build over 30,000 housing units within four years while living in Ilupeju all his life yet questioned if this could be said about someone who takes most of their time assigning resources from the public sector for themselves and their family.
