Barnsley have decided to part ways with Nigerian international Kelechi Nwakali after the midfielder returned late for preseason — www.naijnaira.com reports.
The 26-year-old, who joined the League One side in August 2024, has not featured in any preseason or competitive fixtures this campaign.
Manager Conor Hourihane confirmed that Nwakali will be moved on before the transfer window closes.
When pressed about the midfielder’s future, Hourihane replied, “Yes, that’s the plan.”
Nwakali still has two years remaining on his deal but has been frozen out of first-team training since July.
His absence from matches against Plymouth, Burton, Fleetwood and Bolton further underlined his exclusion from the squad.
It is not the first time disciplinary concerns have cast a shadow on his career, as he was previously dismissed by Spanish side Huesca in 2022 under controversial circumstances.
Before arriving in England, Nwakali had stints at Arsenal, where he never made a senior appearance, alongside loan spells at MVV Maastricht, VVV-Venlo and Porto.
He later represented Ponferradina in Spain and Primeira Liga outfit Chaves before his switch to Oakwell.
Barnsley are yet to decide if his exit will be permanent or a loan move, but his time with the club is effectively over.
