US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has issued a warning to Sudan’s rival factions after a US diplomatic convoy was attacked by fighters believed to be linked to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The incident occurred amid ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which has killed at least 185 people and injured over 1,800.

Blinken called the attack “reckless” and “irresponsible” and urged both sides to agree to a ceasefire.

He also spoke directly to RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and Sudan’s army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to stress that any danger to American diplomats was unacceptable.

The violence risks destabilising the region and could play into competition for influence between Russia and the United States, as well as among regional powers.

UN chief Antonio Guterres has called for a return to calm, warning that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is now catastrophic.
