After eight years since their highly publicized split, Angelina Jolie’s legal team has recently alleged that her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, was physically abusive towards her.
These claims of abuse reportedly occurred prior to the controversial incident that took place between the former couple on a flight in 2016, which ultimately led to Jolie filing for divorce.
For those unfamiliar with the timeline of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s relationship, their romance sparked questions of an affair when they appeared as a married couple in the 2005 film “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.
However, they denied any secret relationship during filming, and Pitt and Aniston announced their divorce in the same year. In 2006, Jolie announced her pregnancy with Pitt’s child.
Throughout their 12-year relationship, they welcomed six children together, three through natural birth and three through adoption.
Despite getting married in 2014, their marriage only lasted two years, and Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.
In the years following their separation, Pitt attempted to sue Jolie for selling her share of their jointly-purchased French winery, Chateau Miraval, to a third party. In response, Jolie filed a countersuit in 2022, alleging that Pitt had been abusive to her and their children during a private jet flight in 2016.
The court documents claimed that Pitt had choked one of their children, struck another in the face, grabbed Jolie by the head, and poured beer and red wine on the children.
However, Pitt has denied these accusations. On April 4th, Jolie’s lawyers filed a motion seeking the release of communications that they claim will prove Pitt’s abuse.
They also alleged that Pitt had previously refused to buy Jolie’s share of the winery without her agreeing to an extensive non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
The court documents emphasized that Pitt’s history of physical abuse extended beyond the 2016 incident, stating that it started well before the flight.
In a statement, Jolie’s attorney, Paul Murphy, said that Pitt’s refusal to purchase Jolie’s interest in the winery and his subsequent lawsuit brought attention to the importance of the NDA and what he hoped it would hide: his abuse towards Jolie and their family.
After months of delays, Jolie’s legal team is now asking the court to compel Pitt to produce the evidence.
