The Presidential Election Petition Court sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja has given its approval to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the reconfiguration of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
The court’s decision comes after INEC had earlier filed an affidavit to assure that no information present in the BVAS would be lost, as it would be stored safely on the back-end server.
Despite objections raised by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate Peter Obi, the court held that such an action from INEC was necessary for preparing for upcoming Governorship and State Assembly elections.
It also declared that repeating a request for scanning or photocopying electoral materials amounts to an abuse of court process.
Furthermore, INEC informed the court that there were a total of 176,000 BVAS which needed to be configured, otherwise it would lead to delays in conducting elections.
