At the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony, hosted at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night (12 March), Brendan Fraser was crowned Best Actor for his role in The Whale.
He competed fiercely against Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Bill Nighy (Living) and Paul Mescal (Aftersun).
During the emotional acceptance of his award, Fraser thanked the Academy and A24 for taking a chance on him.
His performance as an obese man battling grief had been heavily tipped to win before the ceremonies.
