Former President Muhammadu Buhari recently met with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna. They initially viewed the meeting on Monday as a routine courtesy call, but it soon sparked speculation about deeper issues within the party.

According to Daily Trust, the APC governors asked Buhari to prevent key members of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc from leaving the party. Their concern stemmed from growing defections as the 2027 general elections approached.

The CPC, a significant faction within APC, has seen rising tensions, and several former ministers from Buhari’s administration are reportedly planning to join the Social Democratic Party. The governors worry that the departure of this influential bloc could severely harm the APC’s national standing.

The governors also expressed their concerns about Buhari’s enduring influence in the North, fearing that his support for his CPC associates could deliver a devastating blow to the APC’s chances in 2027. They urged him to intervene and convince his CPC allies to remain with the party.

However, the former president rejected their request. “While reaffirming my loyalty to APC, I insist that others must be allowed to make their own political choices, a principle I have upheld throughout my political career,” Buhari reportedly stated.
