Despite David de Gea’s mistakes in Manchester United’s recent Europa League defeat to Sevilla, Erik ten Hag has defended the goalkeeper and believes calls for his replacement are premature.
While De Gea was partly at fault for Sevilla’s opening goal and made another error later in the game, Ten Hag pointed out that he has the most clean sheets in the Premier League, proving his capability as a goalkeeper.
However, Ten Hag did criticize the mentality shown by United’s players in the loss, calling it “unacceptable” and emphasizing the need for character and consistency in order to win trophies.
He acknowledged that the team has bounced back from similar situations in the past and must do so again in order to meet the demands and standards of a club like Manchester United.
