China has dismissed claims by Ukraine that Chinese citizens are fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine as “absolutely groundless.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously stated that two Chinese nationals were captured fighting with Russian troops in the eastern Donetsk region, and suggested that more Chinese individuals may be involved.
According to France 24, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded to the accusations, emphasizing that Beijing has a clear stance on the Ukraine crisis and urging its citizens to stay away from conflict zones. Lin also stressed that the Chinese government has consistently advised against participation in any armed conflict.
Zelensky’s comments raised concerns that China could be the third nation, after Iran and North Korea, to provide military support to Russia. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha summoned China’s chargé d’affaires to demand an explanation, arguing that Chinese citizens fighting in the Russian army would undermine China’s credibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Although China has provided diplomatic and economic support to Russia, it has not been accused of directly supplying weapons or military expertise. The situation remains unclear regarding whether the Chinese individuals joined the fight voluntarily or with Russian encouragement.
Zelensky reported that the clash involving Chinese soldiers occurred near the villages of Tarasivka and Bilohorivka in Donetsk, where six Chinese personnel reportedly engaged Ukrainian forces. Two of these individuals were taken prisoner.
As the war in Ukraine continues, Russia and the United States are preparing for talks in Istanbul, where Russian foreign ministry officials will engage in discussions, possibly concerning embassy operations and diplomatic staff levels.
