King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, have arrived in Colchester to celebrate its newly awarded city status.
While protesters holding a banner with the words “not my King” were present at their arrival at Colchester Castle, local organizations representing the city’s heritage and communities were also there to greet them.
These included refugees who have settled in Colchester and the animal care team from Colchester Zoo.
During a reception held at the castle, King Charles and Camilla unveiled the name of the zoo’s newest rhino calf, Dara.
The calf was born on January 13th and her name means “beautiful” in Swahili.
Later that day, they joined people from Age UK for afternoon tea at Colchester Library where they met with local volunteers and service users from The Silver Line, a free telephone service for older people that Camilla is a patron of.
Additionally, Camilla celebrated Essex Year of Reading alongside local authors and children while also meeting with supporters and volunteers.
Despite protests, the royal couple’s visit aimed to celebrate not only Colchester’s new status but also local heritage, community initiatives, and literacy efforts.
