Former Senate President David Mark has opened up on why the newly formed coalition of opposition movements chose the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election, NaijNaira can report.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Mark described the move as a coordinated step toward challenging President Bola Tinubu’s administration and preventing Nigeria from sliding deeper into authoritarian rule. According to Daily Trust, he also confirmed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and announced his new role as the interim national chairman of ADC.
Mark revealed that the coalition brings together several opposition parties, youth groups, civil society organizations, and patriotic individuals who believe Nigeria needs a new direction. “We are gathered here this afternoon in pursuit of our shared mission to rescue our country and save our hard-won democracy,” he said.
He warned against what he described as the APC-led government’s attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state by infiltrating and destabilizing opposition platforms.
Mark criticized the Tinubu administration’s handling of insecurity, corruption, and economic hardship. “Never before have we witnessed a government so comfortable with corruption, so dismissive of accountability,” he stated.
He also accused the National Assembly of becoming a puppet of the executive, saying legislators now “act like cheerleaders instead of watchdogs.”
Photos later circulated online showing Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi meeting, fueling speculation about the opposition’s likely 2027 candidate.
It’s unclear whether Dumebi Kachikwu, ADC’s 2023 flagbearer, will contest again for the party’s ticket.
