The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has condemned the call for an interim government in Nigeria, describing it as unconstitutional and illegal.

The DHQ’s reaction followed reports that some elements were against the swearing-in of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, on May 29th, 2023.

Speaking to journalists, the Director of Defence Media Operations (DMO), Major General Musa Danmadami, said that the DHQ would not support any move to install an interim government.

He stated that the election had been conducted and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced the president-elect, adding that an interim government was not provided for in the constitution.

Danmadami expressed his surprise at the calls for an interim government, saying that the presidency had repeatedly emphasized that there was nothing like an interim national government.

He described the calls as “mischievous,” adding that the DHQ’s stand was based on the provisions of the constitution.

The DHQ’s stance has been welcomed by many Nigerians who see the call for an interim government as a threat to the country’s democracy.

The country has a history of military coups and dictatorship, and many fear that an interim government could pave the way for a return to the dark days of military rule.

Political analysts say that the call for an interim government is not new in Nigeria’s political landscape.

It is often used as a bargaining chip by political elites who are dissatisfied with the outcome of an election.

They argue that an interim government would provide a platform for the restructuring of the country’s political system, but critics say that it is a ploy to grab power by undemocratic means.
