The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that noodles and their seasonings produced in Nigeria do not contain ethylene oxide or its metabolite.
This statement was made by the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojosola Adeyeye, during a press conference in Lagos.
The investigation was prompted by an alarm raised by the Ministries of Health in Malaysia and Taiwan regarding the presence of ethylene oxide in Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’.
Adeyeye stated that samples were drawn from production facilities and trade across the country and were properly packaged and delivered to the agency’s Central Laboratory in Lagos for analysis.
The findings of the investigation show that the noodles and seasonings produced in Nigeria are safe for consumption, with mycotoxin and heavy metal levels within internationally acceptable limits.
The delay in analytical activities was due to the procurement and supply of certified reference materials, reagents, and chemicals from overseas.
