Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stepped into an unexpected spotlight—this time behind the DJ booth.
He took on the role of a disc jockey and delivered a performance that caught many by surprise, blending music and rhythm in a way that fired up the crowd.
According to Funke Cole’s report on the Lagos Fanti Carnival, the governor embraced this new role during the city’s cultural celebration and was “literally vibing, hitting the thrilled audience with sizzling jams and lyrics on the dance floor!”
The Lagos Fanti Carnival, known for its vibrant celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage, returned with energy and colour, drawing thousands of attendees.
Governor Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, led the festivities, marking the event’s return to Tafawa Balewa Square, where it began with a grand cultural parade.
Organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, in partnership with the Brazilian Descendants Association, the carnival brought together diverse groups from across the state.
Participants arrived in costumes, drums echoed through the streets, and traditional dancers moved through the city’s centre, while spectators lined the roads to witness the cultural performances.
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and his wife, Oluremi Hamzat, joined in, along with dignitaries and cultural figures who turned out to support the event.
Musical acts added to the excitement, with artist Adekunle Gold making a surprise appearance and DJ Spinall keeping the momentum going with a high-energy set.
But the moment that caught everyone’s attention was DJ Sanwo-Olu, who captivated the crowd using DJ techniques like scratching, fading, and looping.
It was an unexpected but memorable part of the festival that added another dimension to the celebration of culture, rhythm, and community.
