The Ebonyi State government has approved a new minimum wage of ₦90,000 for all state civil servants, raising salaries from the previous ₦70,000 – www.naijnaira.com reports.

According to Daily Post, the announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebe, after the State Executive Council meeting on Thursday.

Omebe said the decision was designed to improve the welfare of workers and that the adjustment would be implemented without delay.

“This is not a political statement because the present administration does not play games with workers’ welfare,” the commissioner stated.

He added that the government had already cleared all pension and gratuity arrears for retired state workers dating back to the creation of Ebonyi in 1996.

Verification of retirees in local government areas is currently ongoing, and payment will follow immediately after the process is completed.

Omebe stressed that if the government could shoulder such heavy pension liabilities, an additional ₦20,000 increase for workers should not be questioned.

He described the governor as “a leader, a builder of people, and a promoter of infrastructure development.”

The council also deliberated on the eight-year tenure policy for directors and gave approval for immediate retirement of those who have completed their service period.

The resolution equally applies to permanent secretaries who fall under the same tenure category.
