The ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) Rapid Response Forces have been mobilized to restore order in Niger following a coup by officers from Niger’s Presidential Guard.

President Mohamed Bazoum was deposed and a new governing body, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), was formed.

ECOWAS leaders have demanded the release of Bazoum and have stated that all options for restoring constitutional order are on the table.

Burkina Faso and Mali have expressed solidarity with Niger and criticized ECOWAS sanctions against Niamey, warning that they would consider such measures as an attack on themselves.

The final plan for the deployment of the rapid response forces will be discussed at a meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defense Staff in Accra, Ghana.
