Eight health professionals involved in the medical care of football legend Diego Maradona will face trial for their alleged role in his death.
The Argentine Appeal Court confirmed that the eight will be tried for “simple homicide with wanton disregard” and could face up to 25 years in jail if found guilty.
Maradona died in November 2020 from heart failure after undergoing brain surgery.
Neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni, nurses Ricardo Omar Almiron and Gisella Madrid, psychologist Carlos Diaz, medical coordinator Nancy Forlini, and clinical doctor Pedro Di Spagna will all be tried.
An autopsy revealed that Maradona died of acute pulmonary edema due to congestive heart failure.
A medical board appointed to investigate his death concluded that several members of his medical team acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner.”
The trial is expected to start in 2024.
