Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of the former deputy president of the Senate Ike Ekweremadu, has denied allegations that she was involved in a scheme to search for an organ donor for their ailing daughter Sonia.
Speaking at the Old Bailey in London during her trial alongside her husband, daughter and one doctor on Monday, Beatrice declared that she had no role in the failed £80,000 private procedure meant to take place at Royal Free Hospital, which involved recruiting a young man and falsely presenting him as Sonia’s cousin.
Beatrice went on to explain that she solely consisted of domestic duties such as visiting their children in school every couple of weeks; adding that it was her husband who took care of their finances.
She also revealed that it was her husband who informed her about how they discovered Sonia’s kidney problem and further relayed his discussions with his medically trained brother Diwe to her.
Beatrice denied participating in identifying potential candidates for organ donors and stated that she regarded Diwe Ekweremadu as the family doctor but did not ask about any particular details related to the matter.
The Ekweremadus and Obeta deny all charges against them and their trial continues.
