Looking for a full list of electricity distribution companies in Nigeria? This piece outlines every company, their coverage areas, and how the system operates.
Electricity in Nigeria is managed through a network of regional distribution companies, commonly called DisCos. Each is responsible for supplying power within specific territories across the country.
These companies were established after the privatization of Nigeria’s power sector, a major reform aimed at improving service delivery and efficiency.
Electricity Distribution System in Nigeria
November 2023 marked ten years since the federal government handed the electricity distribution system to private investors. The power sector was divided into three main areas: generation, transmission, and distribution. Generation and distribution were privatized, while transmission remains under government control through the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
Power Generation
Nigeria operates twenty-three power-generating plants connected to the national grid. These facilities are managed by generation companies (GenCos), independent power producers, and Niger Delta Power Holding companies. Together, they supply energy that the DisCos distribute to homes and businesses nationwide.
Distribution Companies (DisCos)
There are eleven private electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. Each operates independently, with its own management and board of directors. Their main responsibility is to deliver electricity directly to consumers within their assigned territories.
Most states are served by one distribution company, though certain border areas share networks with neighboring states. Lagos is the only state with two distinct DisCos—Eko and Ikeja.
Each company has a defined franchise area—its official service territory—covering particular states and localities.
