Things are heating up in Kano after the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, invited Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to an investigative meeting on April 8, 2025, in Abuja.

Daily Trust reports that the invitation links to an incident during the Sallah celebrations when someone attacked the Emir’s entourage. One vigilante died, and another was injured. Surajo Rabiu allegedly died, while Aminu Suleman suffered injuries and needed treatment.

The attack happened as the Emir’s convoy returned from the Kofar Mata Eid prayer ground after the Eid-el-Fitr prayers. Police in Kano arrested Usman Sagiru, who allegedly killed Surajo Rabiu. They took Aminu Suleman to Murtala Muhammed Specialists Hospital in Kano.

An official letter from April 2, 2025, signed by Commissioner of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, confirmed the summons. The letter says, “The Inspector-General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), has directed you to attend an investigative meeting regarding the incident during the Sallah celebrations within your domain.”

The invitation has sparked concern in Kano. Many residents believe it could be an attempt to intimidate or undermine the traditional institution. One resident from Dorayi quarters, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “We see this invitation as an affront to our traditional institution and an attempt to harass and intimidate our Emir. The police failed to provide security on Sallah day.”

Some worry tensions may escalate into unrest. Others fear it could trigger a state of emergency. Another resident clarified that the event was not a grand Durbar. It was simply the Emir’s usual movement from his palace to the mosque.

The resident warned against violating the Emir’s rights, saying it could provoke major resistance from the people of Kano.
