Katchy Ononuju, who once served as aide to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, has said the Peoples Democratic Party used Obi as a political tool — www.naijnaira.com reports.

According to Daily Post, he explained that the party adopted Obi to demonstrate its seriousness about giving every region a place in Nigeria’s leadership.

Ononuju stressed, “Peter Obi was a tool we used to achieve our aim of asserting our seriousness about the argument that everybody should be included in governance.”

The PDP recently held its 102nd National Executive Council meeting in Abuja where it agreed to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South while leaving the National Chairman’s seat in the North.

He recalled how former President Goodluck Jonathan once told party leaders, “It’s not me wanting to run, clean up your house.”

Ononuju argued that zoning the ticket to the South corrects attempts by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to undermine Igbo participation in national politics.

He stated that the decision sends a direct message to Atiku, saying, “PDP called Atiku today that he’s wrong.”

Ononuju also suggested that Atiku might not be acting alone, claiming some groups prefer to keep Igbos out of governance.

He concluded that the move is a first step toward healing internal divisions, though the full recovery of the party remains uncertain.
