Despite an extension to a ceasefire deal between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), deadly fighting and looting continued in Darfur on Thursday.
The three-day ceasefire, which had been repeatedly broken, was extended by 72 hours following pressure from Saudi Arabia and the United States.
The African Union, the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the United States welcomed the extension and urged full implementation, which could be followed by a deescalation plan mapped out in an April 20 blueprint for peace.
At least 512 people have been killed and 4,193 wounded in the fighting, according to health ministry figures, although the real death toll is likely much higher.
The World Food Program has said the violence could plunge millions more into hunger in a country where 15 million people need aid.
