Ahmed Abdullahi finally earned a spot in Sunderland’s senior matchday squad, a year after sealing his move from Belgian side KAA Gent – www.naijnaira.com reports.

According to AllNigeriaSoccer, the 21-year-old forward was named among the substitutes in Sunderland’s Carabao Cup clash with Huddersfield Town at the Stadium of Light.

The tie ended 1-1 in regulation before the Black Cats bowed out 6-5 in a tense penalty shootout.

Abdullahi did not get his debut on the night, but his call-up marked a key moment after months of speculation about his role in the squad.

Manager Régis Le Bris had already tested the Nigerian in pre-season matches against South Shields, Sevilla, Heart of Midlothian, and Hull City, signaling his growing interest in the striker.

The former Flying Eagles star built his career at HB Academy Abuja before leaving for Europe, where Sunderland secured his services in 2024.

Talk of a possible loan move continues to circulate, though he remains tied to the club until the summer of 2028.

On the opposite side, fellow Nigerian David Kasumu impressed in Huddersfield’s midfield and even earned a Player of the Match nomination.
