Philippe Diallo, the French football chief, expressed uncertainty regarding Kylian Mbappe’s availability for the remainder of Euro 2024 after sustaining a broken nose during a collision with Austria’s Kevin Danso in France’s 1-0 group stage victory on Monday night.
Mbappe, the Real Madrid forward, was hospitalized in Dusseldorf but surgery was deemed unnecessary. Should he return to play, he will likely require a protective mask.
Mbappe’s potential absence would be a significant setback for France, who, alongside England, are viewed as favorites to win the tournament and could face each other in the semi-finals.
“The first responses were quite positive as there is no surgery planned for the moment,” said the FFF president.
“Now it is too soon to know if he will be able to play for the remainder of the tournament, or to provide a schedule for his situation.
“Obviously there were some medical examinations performed on site to know more about Kylian Mbappe’s nose and they made some conclusions pretty quickly.
“They tried to reduce the aftermath of his fracture, for him to be able to remain in the tournament.
“As I said, there is no surgery planned for the moment and we are still waiting for things to evolve later in order to know more about the conditions of his participation in the remainder of the tournament.”
France is set to take on the Netherlands on Friday in a pivotal match likely to determine the Group D leader, followed by a match against Poland on Tuesday.
