The G5 Governors, consisting of Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom, Dave Umahi, and a few others had originally sought to support a single presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
However, their ambitions failed to come to fruition as they conceded that local political realities in different states would make it impossible to back only one candidate.
Thus, the choice may be between two popular southern candidates: Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress or Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
Governor Ortom has already expressed his support for Obi while Makinde and Wike appear to prefer Tinubu due to his likelihood of winning and being from the southwest region.
Governors Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu are remaining silent on the issue out of fear of backlash since Obi is also in contention.
Ultimately, G5 Governors have now decided that they can endorse more than one candidate with their preference being based on local political considerations.
