The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has defended its decision not to ban the controversial movie “Gangs of Lagos” despite the controversies surrounding it.
According to the Executive Director and CEO of the regulatory body, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, the NFVCB cannot take any action against the movie for now as they have no legal backing to regulate what is being exhibited on the online platform.
Thomas explained that regulating online platforms poses a lot of difficulties and is not part of the mandate of the Board.
He also mentioned that there is a bill before the National Assembly seeking to empower the Board to regulate online platforms and any other platforms where movies are exhibited.
The movie has faced criticism from Lagos indigenes and the Lagos State Government for alleged defamation of their community and cultural misrepresentation.
Despite this, “Gangs of Lagos” remains available on Amazon Prime Video, featuring a star-studded cast including Tobi Bakare, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, and Zlatan.
