The House of Representatives has refuted accusations that the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, had misled the university lecturers into calling off their 8-month strike.

Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Benjamin Kalu, made it clear in a statement released on Wednesday that no agreement was ever made in regards to paying for salaries for the period during which universities were shut down.

ASUU had gone on an indefinite strike beginning February 14th 2022 and Represenative Gbajabiamila took an active role in helping to resolve this issue.

The House is concerned about these unfounded claims and want Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU President, to be more mindful about accusing people without any proof.

The Federal Government originally withheld pay for when universities were closed out of legal obligation as stated by S. 43(1)(a) Trade Disputes Act, Cap T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN).

As part of his efforts to help end this crisis, negotiations began under the supervision of Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education Rep. Aminu Suleiman with N170 billion allocated towards welfare packages and N300 billion set aside for revitalisation purposes.
