Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has announced his retirement from international football.
The 38-year-old Bayern Munich veteran played 124 matches for Germany and captained his country 61 times.
His last appearance for Germany was in the quarter-final loss to eventual champions Spain at Euro 2024.
Neuer is renowned for his performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper, helping Germany secure the trophy for the fourth time.
Despite the temptation to continue until the 2026 World Cup, He stated on social media that he was convinced it was the right time to retire after discussions with his family and a comprehensive conversation with Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann.
Neuer intends to fully concentrate on Bayern Munich, a club with which he has won two Champions League titles and 11 Bundesliga titles.
This season’s Champions League final will take place at Bayern’s Allianz Arena and he sees this as extra motivation.
Neuer’s departure from international football follows the retirements of fellow 2014 World Cup winners Thomas Mueller and Toni Kroos, as well as current Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan.
