Gianni Infantino, the FIFA President, has unveiled the “Pele Stadium” in Rwanda after asking countries across the world to honour Brazilian football legend Pele by naming a stadium after him.

This followed the death of Pele on 29th December 2020 and was launched on 15th March 2021 at an event attended by both President Paul Kagame and Infantino.

The two leaders also participated in a tournament featuring FIFA officials and other football legends.

At Pele’s funeral in January 2021, Infantino revealed that FIFA intended for every country to have at least one stadium bearing Pele’s name, so that children around the world could learn of his significance.

He further paid tribute to the superstar upon opening proceedings at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Paris.
