Following the retirement of Hugo Lloris, Kylian Mbappe has been tipped as a potential candidate to replace him as France’s national team captain.
However, according to Jerome Rothen, who is a former French international, Didier Deschamps will not be selecting Mbappe for the role due to his immense popularity among non-football fans.
Instead, Rothen believes that Raphael Varane stands as the natural replacement for Lloris due to his vice-captaincy for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Although Rothen thinks that Mbappe would make an excellent captain for the Blues, he does not believe that Deschamps would give him the captaincy due to “just too much noise”.
“If it was me, Mbappé would be the new captain of the Blues. But knowing Didier Deschamps and his mode of operation, I think he will not put him as captain,” he said as quoted by Sportskeeda. Rothen explained: “Why? Because he does just too much noise.”
