In August, there were reports that the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, had resigned from his position.

According to Reuters, Emefiele tendered his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu.

However, the letter was initially rejected by the Department of State Services (DSS), as the law only allows for it to be submitted to the president.

Despite this, Emefiele’s decision to resign has put to rest any legal concerns regarding the nomination of Yemi Cardoso as the new governor of CBN.

President Tinubu also nominated four new deputy governors alongside Cardoso.

Emefiele’s suspension in June and subsequent legal issues have been ongoing, with a fresh 20-count charge being instituted against him.

It has been reported that Emefiele proposed a plea bargain agreement, which required his resignation as CBN governor and the disgorgement of some assets.
