Rivers State has appointed new administrators for all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state, effective from April 7, 2025. This development follows the suspension of all boards of agencies, commissions, and parastatals when Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas assumed office as Administrator of the state. Additionally, some of these boards have now been reconstituted. According to a statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Worika, the appointments aim to improve local governance.
The list of appointed administrators includes individuals such as Mr. Okroiyobi Animiete for Abua/Odual LGA and Dr. Tamunotonye Peters for Akuku Toru LGA. Furthermore, the Rivers State Electoral Commission has been restructured, with Dr. Micheal Ekpai Odey appointed as its Chairman. This reorganization follows a judgment from the apex court, which declared the LG election held on October 5, 2024, invalid.
The appointment of these administrators has faced legal challenges, as human rights lawyer Courage Nsirimovu filed a suit seeking to halt the process. The Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has scheduled a hearing for April 14, 2025, to address this matter.
