In court, Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy President of the Senate, testified that his doctor had advised him not to recruit a kidney donor from within his family.
Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice are accused of luring a Nigerian man to London in order to harvest organs for their daughter Sonia, who is also on trial.
The man was supposedly offered £80,000 for the procedure at the Royal Free Hospital.
However, due to the 21-year-old being deemed unsuitable as a donor, the family searched elsewhere and eventually focussed their attention on Turkey.
During cross-examination, Prosecutor Hugh Davies KC asked why Ekweremadu had been prepared to leave an “internationally recognised centre of excellence” in London for cheaper medical treatment in Turkey.
In response, Ekweremadu denied being wealthy and claimed he was just trying to save money on his daughter’s clinical outcome. He remains in custody while the trial continues.
